I have a question about the Chicago Pride Parade, and every other pride parade in the country. This man is Peter Roskam. He’s a Republican congressman from Illinois. Probably not a terrible guy.
He is, however, not supportive of gay rights. He voted against prohibiting employer discrimination on the basis of sexual preference, and against enforcing against anti-gay hate crimes.
With minimal effort (my usual), I see at least four of his campaign contributors on the Chicago Pride Parade roster:
Bear in mind that I only checked his 2012 donors, didn’t research “parent” companies, and only looked through it once. Like I said, minimal effort.
So here’s my question: Why are we allowing companies to pretend to be gay-friendly, in a very visible way, when their political contributions indicate otherwise?
There are probably dozens, if not hundreds (if you count state reps) of anti-gay politicians. And many of their contributors will be basking in the warm positive publicity offered by running a Pride Parade float, lining the pockets of the very people who aim to squash gay rights all the while.
So…maybe we should like, look this stuff up every now and then?
You can look up your very own anti-gay elected officials and cross-reference their donors with your local pride parade’s roster here: http://www.opensecrets.org/
